venting

This is me biting my lip and restricting snark to the use of italics.

No expression of surprise that the OP is apparently using a nightly build. No wondering why Dreamhost had left the wordpress import feature out of my 2.0.4 one-click install. No pointing out that the news post linked to in timethief’s reply says that it isn’t in 2.0. No doubting what the purpose might be of a series of posts which just say ‘the previous answer is exactly right’ without adding anything useful. Hijacking the thread with snark rather than answering the question wouldn’t help anyone either.

But if I didn’t say anything anywhere, I think my lip would start to bleed.

^^ This is still my favourite one, how a moderator gets to post his topic as sticky just because he’s having an issue (whereas if it was someone else, the thread would have been left as a normal thread) and then whines about it not being a sticky anymore.

  2. I was puzzled by that thread too. Lorelle has been complaining about the general brokenness of future posts for as long as I can remember, so it’s not like it’s a new issue.

methinks drmike might be reaching the limits of his tolerance.

the whole thing is really annoying, you and i have both posted the correct answer enough times that you’d think the people who post in there every 5 minutes might have taken note and could just refer to technosailor, rather than their beloved search function.

but i think idiotic threads are going to continue until an FAQ entry is made, or WP 2.1 is released.

    bets on which comes first?

It seems like a lot of volunteers just forget that not everyone is super-advanced with the nightly builds. Irritating.

I’ve thought about this a bit more and, you know, either you’re a moderator and entrusted with the power to sticky whatever you want, or you’re not. If staff are going to overrule you, it’s a matter of courtesy for them to contact you privately and say ‘look, this thread doesn’t need to be sticky, because a) we don’t want to publicise the problem and b) it gives the impression you’re prioritising the problem because it’s yours, so I’ve gone ahead and demoted it.’

Undoing the decisions of mods without bothering to inform them or explain why just undermines the mod’s authority. If you think someone’s getting above themselves, you tell them. I know it’s a delicate operation, but if you don’t trust someone enough to be upfront with them, what were you doing giving them moderator powers in the first place?

bingo, wank – you just nailed the crux of many a problem.
