the sandbox is dead, long live the canvas

It sounds like the Sandbox dream is dead. By the time we get to 2.2 (spring 2008, probably) Sandbox will emphatically not be ‘new’ (though I also think we could stand to lose Matt’s beloved Kubrick by that point).

I hope the flower delivery guy is proud of himself.

Anyone want to take bets on the eventual choice being some bastardized version of Canvas with Garland’s customisable colours, stripped of its CC licence and credited to Automattic on the grounds of being based on the widget code? Because, you know, even k2 will be looking tired by then.

that’s a shame. i’m still not on board with the hatred of anything vaguely commercial, so i’m not ready to blame the background #fff guy for his theme not being defaultified.

i’m also still confused as to how it is that canvas irks you so much when widgets are based on scriptaculous‘ shopping cart script, which is MIT licensed. canvas has every right to make their code NC on top of that, as long as they didn’t borrow anything specificly from widgets.

although timeline-wise, i’m still convinced that canvas was started before widgets were, and it’s far more likely that kyle neath, no.oneslistening, and automattic were _all_ drinking the scriptaculous kool-aid.

    kubrick4eva. gag me.

i like using nabble to link to threads, so that new comments are readily clickable. despite the fear that dr. mike might continue sending DMCA requests, and actually get someone to take him seriously.

  4. I don’t mind Canvas using an non-GPL-compatible CC licence. What I mind is the WP devs saying for years that themes had to be GPL-compatible because they were relying on WordPress functions etc. etc. etc, but throw a bit of javascript into your theme to make it extra shiny and that requirement apparently goes out of the window. It’s the lack of consistency that irks me.

Being non-GPL-compatible, there’s no way Canvas could make it into the core right now (the hackers list would go nuts) and rather than ask them to relicence it I suspect Matt would prefer to make his own widget-based version so widgets can sneak into core at the same time and everything is super-integrated. And maybe get Matt 2 to knock up something with massive bold fonts and a big blue header to sit on top of it😉
