Oh, polls. People have only been asking for them for a couple of years. More fuel for raincoaster’s theory that they’re piling on the geegaws in preparation for another date with the venture capitalists.

Also, the forums seem an odd place to put that announcement. Either Mark doesn’t have posting privileges on the news blog or PollDaddy aren’t paying enough to get that sort of linkage😉

  1. What? No mention that it’s not open source?😀

They’ve done this before. A couple of the video sites were “discovered” either by trial or error or Mark mentioned it in passing in regards to a support question in the forums or the user came to the forums to ask questions about it.

why, it is a User Driven Development, isn’t it?

I remember Toni celebrated the deal with Vimeo announcing its shortcodes in the fora. but first there was a FAQ entry by telyworth, though. no linkage from the news blog as well.

I think rc has more than a theory. I do not know a lot about Wall St but I understand the way they get investors in the early stage IPOs is to offer big chunks of the wonga from the final cashing in the chips float. The one always follows the other. Unless economic conditions change or unknown factors – business failure – intervene. A key clue will be the appointment of pukka management. Matt sitting on cushions in his SF apartment does have a appeal of the ideal life style for many people but the big investors want offices and big infrastructures. The appointment of high fallutin PR agencies is another surefire indicator of a float.

  4. According to an interview with one of the VCs a while ago, Matt was all for taking a $200m offer until the investors managed to convince him there were bigger profits to be made. You could read that as signalling future flotation, or alternatively you could see it as proof that Matt’s OK with the idea of selling. (At least one person in the comments on techcrunch sees the leaking of the $200m figure as an attempt to inflate the company’s value.)

I still think acquisition by a major player is more likely than an IPO in the current economic climate, but I freely admit I know nothing.

Sure. I mention IPO but a buy out is equally possible. My point, yours, and rcs is that they are fattening the calf.

OT: Did anyone notice we have a new overlord with a username of bubel?

  7. Oh, he sounds corporate. Claims to be a Happiness Engineer and just graduated in ‘Management Information Systems and Marketing’. So, not off-topic at all.

It’ll be interesting to see whether he stays in a support role or whether the post evolves into something a bit more, well, marketing-based. Probably not in the short term, though; weekend .com support has already been delayed by Hanni’s departure.

Personally I think the weekend support thing was just another empty promise.

Another happiness engineer rapidly switching their blog to WordPress. LOL.

  10. Surprised that you missed that right after Matt gets an award from Temple University, they hire someone from that school’s administration.

    Hmmmm…..

Can you say Conflict of Interest? I knew you could.

  11. Oh, I did miss that. That’s a fantastic way of making sure you walk into a job after graduation: persuade your department to give an award to your potential boss. I have high hopes for this one.

I think weekend .com support is something the investors would like to see (struggling startup which can’t afford to pay people to work weekends isn’t exactly the image they’re seeking to project) so it probably will arrive eventually. Maybe around the time that 2.6 comes out and they get flooded with people wanting to know where their cheese is.

  12. I bet that shaved vagina avatar on the front page of wp.com right now isn’t an image they want to project either.🙂

I believe the last two hires that Toni mentioned were listed has Happiness Engineers.

Mike, missed the shaved vagina. You should have made a screenshot for posterity. I’m sure the investors would really have loved that.

  15. And here we go with the offices:

There doesn’t seem to be much actual point in opening up an office and expecting freelancers to drive to work (surely the ability to work from home is a major factor in why people choose to freelance?) but whatever, they can tell the next round of investors they have An Office.

I dont know about happiness engineer but bubel is not a web developer. His blog jitters every which way. It has 10px jogs in every direction. He should install Gemini. LOL.

Gotta say I kinda missed out on the shaved vagina.

  19. Who says I didn’t take a screencap of it?
